Yes, we need to talk about this.
Can we talk about this?
Let’s talk about this.
If you know me (or have for the past few years) you may know that 50 Shades of Grey is actually 50 Shades of Big Deal to me. Truth be told (warning, this may come as a shock to some of you!) I haven’t actually read the book. I’ve read the original fanfic.
Yes, that’s like, a thing and here is the definition of fanfic for those of you who are beyond confused right now. Spoiler Alert – write fanfic, you may become a bazillionaire.
I started reading 50 Shades of Grey (or Master of the Universe as it was called back then as Twilight fanfic [more on that here]) in December 2009. As is the way with fanfic – it would update every week or two, sometimes three. Leaving the time between chapters feeling like an eternity.
Case and point? When Echo Charlie went down – I had to wait weeks before I knew that Christian was ok. And when that chapter updated – this was me in a club, hiding in a corner with a drink, reading it on my Blackberry.
The first time I went to Hawaii, I made sure that Kate texted me the minute it updated. And I was on a plane flying from Waikiki to the Big Island when it did. Important to note, the most recent chapter had also ended on a cliffhanger. So as soon as we got to our resort, the beautiful Fairmont Orchid (love!), I found the nearest palm tree and devoured the newest chapter beneath it.
You see, while everyone fell in love with Christian and Ana (or hated them – I respect that there is a lot of hate out there and that’s cool) over the span of three books, all readily available, allowing you to read one after the other without any breaks in between – I read it painfully, slowly one chapter at a time.
It got me through some lonely nights during the worst break-up of my life. It made for great reading material on vacations as well as something to read in hotel rooms and airports while travelling across Canada for work in 2010.
So naturally, when the book was published, I tried to read it but just couldn’t do it. While it was virtually identical to the fanfic – the name changes alone was enough to freak me out.
That said – the movie? I am excited for the movie.
So all of that pre-amble to say – let’s talk about the important things.
Let’s talk about this:
Because I am happy about this but as always – I want to know what the rest of you are thinking.
Oh. And in case anyone was wondering – I am really impartial to who is playing Ana. Let’s face it. It’s all about Christian. But – I will say this. I have all the faith in the world in Dakota Johnson. Her 5 minute bit in The Social Network still kills me. “I just slept with Sean Parker? You’re like a gazillionaire!” So I’m onboard.
But Christian. Tell me how you feel about Christian. Hit the comment button below and let it all out.
